Countywide

Today is the last day of school. Elementary school students will be dismissed at 1 p.m., middle school students will be dismissed at 12:25 p.m. and high school students will be dismissed at 11:50 a.m.

Summer school will be held at Colonial Forge High School from June 27 to Aug. 9. The last day to preregister is June 14.

Registration will be held at Colonial Forge High School, 8-11 a.m., on the first day of classes, for those students who did not preregister.

Deputy Wally Johnson and Major David Decatur from the Stafford County Sheriff's Department presented certificates and D.A.R.E. pencil cases to fifth-graders during a D.A.R.E graduation ceremony Tuesday, June 4.

Mandy Sullivan and Dexter McDougle were masters of ceremonies. Hallie Pere, Jessica Hopkins, Matthew Bohmke, Michelle Wiltshire and Ashley Tensley read D.A.R.E. essays, and each class made a drug awareness presentation.

Deputy Johnson was honored with a book written, illustrated and narrated by fifth-graders; signed D.A.R.E. banners from each class; and a gift certificate.

Third- and fourth-grade awards assemblies will be held the last day of school, Wednesday, June 12.

Hartwood Elementary

Fourth-graders collected more than $600 during a penny drive to benefit Harbor House Hospice. The loss of guidance counselor Kay Orr two years ago inspired the project.

The following members of the Recorder Club, directed by music teacher Colleen Filbey, played songs from the Renaissance period and two folk songs for senior citi-zens at the Enon Community Center: Tiffany Gatson, Jared Eastman, Jessie Zarudzky, Elizabeth Ellenwood, Shaun Moshasha, Tyler Smith, Katie Stake, Jessica Merrit, Matthew Ebert, Marco Levine and Virginia Parkey.

Jared Eastman and Shawn Moshasha played pieces on the piano, and Jessica Merritt played a trumpet solo of "America the Beautiful."

Fourth-graders Megan Dommel, Theron Pope, Michael Lane and Nick Hagans are training to be anchors for WHES. They will read the announcements on WHES in June and September.

Fourth-graders Adrian Adame, Rayburn Bittner, Phil Chirico, Jeff Davidson, April Hardy and Tina Pitsnogle earned all A's for the fifth grading period.

Fifth-graders Kaja Baum, Kara Callihan, Ben Hemenway, Melissa Klocinski, Sophia Leoni, Virginia Parkey, Kate Stake and Tim Wisniewski received all A's.

The fifth grade sponsored a Community Safety and Awareness Afternoon on May 29 after spending the morning at D.A.R.E. Day. The Hartwood Fire Department provided a fire truck demonstration and small group lectures. Julie Battie from the Tri-County/City Soil and Water Conservation District set up an enviroscape demonstration with presentations on pollution and conservation. Joanne Murray demonstrated CPR and the Heimlich maneuver.

Hartwood staff, parents, community members and former Hartwood students donated 30 pints of blood during a Red Cross blood drive sponsored by the fifth-grade.

Special education paraprofessional Tana Mauck was named Stafford County's Service Employee of the Year. Mauck is well-known for sharing her homemade goodies with the staff and her students.

Fourth-grade teacher Sylvia Jeff-coat is retiring after 32 years at Hartwood.

Elementary

Third-grader Marlee LaFollette earned Colucci Dollars in teacher Kara Colucci's class and used them to bid on and win the chance to spend the day in the library June 4. She checked in books and read to two of the kindergarten classes.

Third-grader Olive Pyne earned the Extra Mile Award for working with a special needs student. Fifth-grade teacher Grace Hynden also received the award, which is presented by Stafford County.

Eighth-grader Kathryn Roberson's poster design won first place at the county level of the Computer Graphics Design Contest sponsored by the Virginia State Fair. Katheryn won a $300 scholarship, and her design will be entered at the state competition.

Megan Cadow, Johanna Dowling and Lauren Pavlik were selected to participate in the Fredericksburg Regional Chamber of Commerce Education Foundation's Student Force Program for the summer. Megan will job shadow at Rappahannock Family Physicians, Johanna Dowling will work with the Fredericksburg Public Defender's Office, and Laurin Pavlik will work at Petco as a veterinarian's assistant.

H. H. Poole Middle

Julia Battey from the Tri-County Soil and Water Conservation District in Spotsylvania visited seventh-grade students on Team America to discuss conservation, water pollution, the Chesapeake Bay and the watersheds in our region.

The boys track team won four meets and lost one.

Poole scored 165 points to place second in the county at the county track meet at Stafford High School May 23.

Amir Esmaili broke the county record in the 2,400-meter run by 7 seconds, with a time of 7 minutes, 47 seconds, and he won the 1,600 with a time of 4:58. Other first place finishers at the county meet were: John Brown, shot put; Chris Barnes, the 100, Gerard Puckerin, the 400; and Cordell Barrett, the 200.

In a dual meet, Poole outscored Drew, 97-30. Kyle Lloyd scored 18 points, Gerard Puckerin scored 15 points, and Matt Fouch scored 12.

Poole defeated A.G. Wright 72-14. Caleb Strong won the shot put, and Matt Fouch won the high jump.

Poole fell to Stafford Middle with a score of 79-48. Amir Esmaili won the 1,600 and the 2,400.

Poole swept 12 of 15 events to beat Gayle 119-8. Amir broke the school record in the 2400, Jesse Maghan finished second in the 1,600 and the 2,400, and Greg Ziek, Caleb Strong and Matt Huntley swept the discus event to defeat Thomspon 82-45.

The May Citizens of the Month were: eighth-graders Megan Balch, Jeremy Caulfield, Jessica Cooke, Darbey Cunningham, Adrienne Filipovich, Daniel Merritt, Courtney Oldbon and Ginny Riffle; seventh-graders Colby Bohn, Ginger Budd, Mareth Careberg and Chris Neuhard; and sixth-graders Garrett Boster, Brittany King and Mat Matuszewski.

The 2002-2003 SCA officers are: Chris Neuhard, president; Victoria Shirley, vice president; Samantha Oliver, secretary; Stacey Nelson, treasurer; Francis Lester, reporter; and Stephen Cooke, historian.

During the school year, the SCA donated items to Hope House, gave more than 1,000 canned food items to the Fredericksburg United Methodist Church's Outreach Food Bank Program and raised more than $800 for Michael Miller, a leukemia patient who needs a transplant.

Cindy Ward and Kathy Mason sponsor the SCA.

Sixth-graders Allison Frazier, Shannon Smith, Nick Grady and Zak Pignaloso planted and monitored bay grasses in underwater trays in the classroom, then accompanied teacher Cynthia Seiffert to the Rappahannock River to plant them. The Chesapeake Conservation Foundation sponsored the project.

Thompson Middle

The band, chorus and strings performed at the Musicale competition at Busch Gardens May 31.

The seventh- and eighth-grade band, directed by Kathy Seman, received a rating of superior and a first place trophy and was named Grand Champion. The rating is the band's fourth superior award in two years.

The Select Chorus received a superior rating and a first place trophy.

The combined seventh- and eighth-grade chorus received an excellent rating and a second-place trophy. Christine Stanley directs the choral program.

The combined sixth-, seventh- and eighth-grade orchestra, directed by Ed Stephenson, received an excellent rating.

Kara Hutchinson won the school-level Virginia State Fair cover contest. Her entry won second place at the county level. Kara will receive scholarship money for her award.

The Outstanding Reader Award is a new reading award presented to students who have demonstrated a special interest in reading, participated eagerly in reading class, completed assigned reading and projects on time and generally had a great attitude about reading.

The Student Council Association raised money to purchase an entrance sign for Thompson Middle School. Money raised by a pumpkin walk, dance concessions, Valentine's Day candy-grams and a bake sale, and a $1,500 prize from the Back-to-School Contest sponsored by Spotsylvania Mall were used to purchase the sign.

Students in the classes of seventh-grade science teacher Lisa Lovelace and eighth-grade technical education Jon Barr collaborated to construct and place 18 bluebird boxes around the school grounds.

The science students also planted wildflower seeds in the Outdoor Learning Lab's meadow with the assistance of wildlife biologist Dan Lovelace, master gardener Don Mutersbaugh and parent volunteer Lori Gould. The funds for both projects were received through a Building Bright Futures grant.

The Master Gardener Association of the Central Rappahannock Region awarded the Outdoor Learning Lab a $300 grant to plant a transitional garden, which will provide a protective barrier between the Outdoor Lab and the playing fields and will afford wildlife with an excellent food source and additional shelter.

Drafting student Alex Bunyard was hired to work with ArtBuilt Homes of North Stafford. Scott Abukoff will work with Bradley/Parker & Associates in Alexandria.

Justin Berg, Kristina Berghoffer, Krystal Centers and Nicloe Columbe completed the Nurses Aide program and will take state board examinations. Students and nursing staff recently organized and presented the "Don't Be Blind to Diabetes" Health Fair to educate staff members about diabetes and to offer free blood-sugar testing and information on nutrition and diet for diabetics.

There will be a $5 fee to replace lost math and reading packets over the summer. The math sheets and book report are due on the first

day of school.

During the summer, office hours will be: June and August, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m., Monday through Friday; and July, 9-11 a.m., Tuesday and Thursday only.

School will re-open Aug. 26.

Freshman Chase Liberatore's poem, "In Heaven's Dream," was accepted for publication in an upcoming issue of Virginia Writing.

Fredericksburg Academy Summer Program runs June 17 through Aug. 16. One-week enrichment sessions in subjects such as soccer camps, quilting, sign language, history and writing, are offered. Rising kindergartners through eighth-graders will participate in the program. Many sessions are fully enrolled, at this time but a few openings remain. Inquiries should be directed to Dolores McCluskey.
